Distinguished by their ripeness, structure, and elegance, some of the best wines in the world come from Australia's McLaren Vale. Wine Spectator has featured several in their Top 5, like Mollydooker, Two Hands, and Penfolds. This elegant Cabernet Sauvignon would be three or four times the price if it was made in Napa or Sonoma, but since it's from Australia, it's a fraction of the price. Deep purple in the glass, powerful floral notes of lavender jump out at you with warm aromas of plums, eucalyptus and Asian spice. Excellently structured, the flavors are big and bold yet extremely well balanced. Fine elegant tannins elongate the finish of this serious and substantial wine, aged in a combination of new French and American oak.
A five star winery from James Halliday's Australian Wine Companion, the Kangarilla Road Winery is a bright star in McLaren Vale. Founded by Kevin and Helen O'Brien in 1997, when they purchased the old Cambrai Vineyard on Kevin's birthday. The vines here date back to the 1970s and are generally recognized as some of the best in Southern Australia. Kevin spent 12 years in the wine industry managing wine companies, as well as two years as the international manager of the Australian Wine Export Council prior to starting his own winery. With that much experience in the market prior to forming Kangarilla Road, it's no surprise that Kevin and Helen have enjoyed such wonderful success with this fantastic label.
